TMI

We were sitting outside on the playground and one of my little girls was messing with my skirt. I told her to stop because we didn't want anyone to see my panties. She went on to explain that her daddy wears panties. I wanted to make sure I heard her right so I asked her to repeat what she said. She explained that her daddy put on her momma's panties. Still puzzled by the weird statement, I just decided to leave it at that. Having forgotten all about this silly incident, I get to school this morning and check my email. The little girl's mom had emailed me to inform me that her daughter told her about the daddy story. She said she busted out laughing! She assured me that her husband did not wear panties nor had he ever put hers on. :) Never a dull moment.

more from M at macon road

I was preparing my students for a tornado drill. I went on to explain that our tornado drill is the one where we go into the hall and hide our heads. M quickly explains that she can't do that because that will "make her hair all a mess." Let's remember... she's 4.

During phonics time, I explain that I'm fixing to teach them how to read. M looks up at me and says, "Oh Thank You, Mrs. Jerkins!" As if she's been waiting her whole life for someone to come along and teach her.

Never a dull moment.

I know some of you wonder why I post all these silly things from school. One is definitely because they're too cute not to share, but also so I will remember them. If only I had begun this blog when I was doing my student teaching in the ghetto... oh what stories I had.

Lily Grace

I can't believe our little Lils is 2! Like her big sister, she has brought so much joy and def. laughter into our lives. I don't think another child can squeal and throw a fit like the Lils. We know it's a phase and one that I'm sure Jules and Jeff are ready to see come to an end.... but one day we'll miss it. She is strong willed and we know that God has great plans to use her strength and determination for His glory. She has a laugh that is contagious... and a smile that lights up her whole face and any room she's in. Lily Grace, we love you so much!

Happy 2nd Birthday!

Saturdays

Saturdays are my one day to sleep in. Wouldn't you know it.... I was wide awake at 7:30. I got up, made my coffee, watched my DVR-ed Survivor, did my bible study and then we were off to Lily's donut birthday party. From there we went and looked for wedding dresses for my soon to be sister-in-law, Bethany. After that, we headed to the Cordova festival. It was a little disappointing, but you better believe we got a pronto pup or rather "Cordova Ugly Dog." We finally came back and met the boys to watch football. Maggie and I ended up taking a glorious nap that was rudely interrupted by screaming football fans. Despite waking up early and the craziness of the day... I love my Saturdays and wouldn't trade them for anything.

Parents' Day

Today was parents' day for K4 at my campus. From 8:30-9:30 on parent days, parents come into our classrooms and watch a miniature version of our day. We try to cram in phonics, numbers, bible, silly songs, shapes, colors, etc. in an hour so parents can see what we do on a daily basis. They essentially come and are able to see what they're paying for. It's a fun time for everyone...when the kids properly participate. I did keep reminding my children that their parents came to hear them sing and not just Mrs. Jerkins.

After my parents left, we took the kids outside to the playground. While out there, C proceeds to lift my skirt almost completely up. (Thankfully all parents were gone by this time!) I said, "C!!!!!" He laughed and said, "Sorry Mrs. Jerkins. I must have lost my mind."

This is now 2 different occasions where "I lost my mind" was used. Thinking back over the last couple of weeks I can remember teasing them about the choice they were making by saying... you guessed it.... "Have you lost your mind?!"

So although my kids' choices were not my fault.... their distinct answer was.

Macon Road Monday Musings

Mondays are ever so glorious. Especially when you wake up to drizzle and fog so thick you can't see out of your window. Days like that just make you want to crawl back under the covers. But there are bills to pay so get out of bed I must. Today my class has been ever so entertaining.... taking a mundane Monday and given me many reasons to smile... have I mentioned how much I love my job? So for my Macon Road Monday Musings:

I was sitting in my chair finishing my lunch when one of my little girls looked at my freshly polished toes and proceeded to explain that my polish which is... OPI 'A man in every portugal'... made her want to throw up. Thank you Ava... I am now finished with my lunch.

My kids were working on a worksheet and I look up to see one of my little girls hanging sideways out of her desk. I said, "M, what are you doing?" She responded, "I don't know, I must have lost my mind."

There is never a dull moment in Mrs. Jerkins class.

realization

I was talking to my class about what they want to be when they grow up. I heard some of the obvious answers, "Policeman, fireman, etc." Then C said, "I want to work at a school so I can pull people's conduct sticks!" I guess around here we pull conduct sticks more than we realize.

my D

As much as I have loved having my sisters spend the night with me, there's just nothing like having my D home. I think the longer you're married the easier it is to take for granted having your spouse around. Little did I realize just how much I love and appreciate him. He's probably already tired of me coming up behind him and hugging him and saying, "I'm so glad you're home." (Let me remind you that he was only gone 3 days... it felt longer though!) So to my married ladies and even almost married ladies... let your significant other know how much he means to you!

Memphis

Ok... a friend of mine who used to be a fellow Memphian (and now has gone to the dark side) ...meaning she recently became a Texan... gave me an idea for a blog post. I wrote the other day about what I like about Memphis. She wants me to now blog about what I do not like about Memphis. Ok... here goes...

10. It's definitely not the safest of cities (but now a days no city is really that safe)
9. Drivers are crazy (but that's not limited to Memphis)
8. We tease that there's never anything to do (in all reality there is)
7. In the summer it's 190 degrees and extremely humid
6. We only get 1 snow day a year if we're lucky
5. No matter what you say... everything is a race issue
4. We have people like Jerry "the king" Lawler running for mayor
3. We're at least 6 hours away from the closest beach
2. We don't have a Cheesecake Factory
1. The Sorrell's are not here!

In all honesty, I love Memphis and have no desire to live anywhere else despite my list. This will always be home.

Christmas in the Valley

A friend of mine has set up an incredibly, fun opportunity. She has organized a very unique crafts fair. (See the right side of my blog for more details!) Christmas in the Valley will be held October 17th in her mother's beautiful home in a subdivision called The Valley. Furniture will be moved out and amazing vendors will be there. Some of the vendors include: Premier Jewelry, Uppercase Living, Ava Grace Photography, Sugar N Spice Tutu's, monogrammers, and more! This will be a great opportunity to bring your girlfriends, have a ball, and get some Christmas shopping done!

I love my sisters!!!!!

D left yesterday to go to a youth pastor's conference in Rome, Georgia with some of his buddies who are also youth pastors. He won't be back until Wednesday night. This left me in a predicament... stay by myself like a big girl or recruit roommates for the next few nights. I decided it would be a lot more fun to have 2 of my favorite sisters spend the night.... Jules would have come too, but she has babies that need their mommy. I first should mention that I have the best sisters in the world. God gave me the best biological sister. When I married D, I gained another sister and will soon officially have another one! I love them so much! I love that we all have a great relationship with each other, too. Let's just say I will definitely need a nap this afternoon. We didn't go to bed until 2 this morning. Anyone who knows me knows how much I value my sleep so sisters.... feel loved. I don't stay awake for just anyone!

lock-in

Last night we had our first FBCHW lock-in... or lock out rather. I should first explain to you that there is probably nothing that Daniel and I like less. However, we thought that for one night we'd could suffer through it for our kids. I had to go in with the mind set that "it's not about me." For one, I wasn't put here on this earth for my pleasure and comfort. It's all about Jesus.... knowing him and making him known. But for last night, it wasn't about what I liked or what I would rather be doing. We did the lock-in for the enjoyment of our teenagers. To provide an opportunity for them to have fun with one another, bring friends, and be challenged by God's word. I must admit we had a ton of fun though! We met at the church at 9 and ate pizza, played games, and D gave a devotional. Then from 10:30-12:30 we went cosmic bowling. From 1:00-4:00 we went to putt-putt (which we had all to ourselves)... we had unlimited everything. At 4:00 we headed back to the church and had a movie (for the sleepy weenies) and dodge ball for everyone else. At 7, we had some very sweet women bring us a delicious breakfast that included pancakes, breakfast casseroles, quiche, and sausage and biscuits. Overall it was a great night! Now we were definitely ready for our bed come morning, but we agreed we would definitely do it again!

Memphis

I have lived in Memphis my whole life. I don't know if it's because I don't like change or I actually like Memphis, but unlike so many of my high school friends.... I am content to live here forever. Here are some of the reasons I love Memphis:
-both our families are here (I like to think our relationships are closer than most)
-Bellevue (for sports and so many other reasons... it will always be home)
-Cheesecake Corner (the best cheesecake you'll ever put in your mouth)
-Jerry's Sno Cone (enough said)
-Shelby Farms (I don't actually go there that often, but I like having the option)
-Memphis Zoo (being a teacher, I get to enjoy it even though I don't have kids of my own...yet)
-Central BBQ, Corky's, Brad's... it doesn't matter. BBQ here is awesome!
-Macon Road Baptist School (I love my job)
-FedEx Forum (I love going to Tiger basketball games and hopefully will soon love Grizzlies games now that AI is coming)
-Memphis bridge (there's nothing like crossing that bridge...that really scares me... to remind me that I'm home)

I know there are so many other reasons why I love Memphis, but I'm drawing a blank. What are your favorite things about this crazy city?

oh dear

While I was in the middle of teaching, one of my little girls shouts out, "Mrs. Jerkins, you look like Hannah Montana!" Oh dear.

yummmmmy!

I'm proud to admit that last night I ate a pronto pup and a fried twinkie and they were worth the whole trip to the fair! The pig and ostrich races were quite disappointing, but the food and $1 sweet tea were fantastic. If you can't decide if it's worth.... it is!

FAIR

Every since I was a little girl, we would get checked out of school early (yes, my parents were cool like that) on a wristband day and we would go and spend hours at the fair. I love everything about it! The bright lights, the smell of fried foods, the music from the rides, even the annoying 'let me guess your weight' guys. Weather permitting, we are going tonight. Thank goodness now you don't even have to fear for your life as you park and walk up to it. I guess because the fair was such a tradition in our family and I have so many fond memories, I can't think of anything negative about it. Well, it's not a cheap date night, there are those who lose their dinner after a good tilt a whirl, the fact that you consume no telling how many calories ... (but we'll just not think about that!) But the food there is the best. It's probably just average but because it's 'fair food' it's a must.I can't decide what I want to eat tonight... so many choices.... smoked turkey leg, pronto pup, funnel cake, chicken on a stick, cotton candy, fried twinkie.... maybe a little of everything...now that both our mouths are watering... what's your favorite fair food?

signature

I figured out how to create a signature all by myself! (It took all of nap time, but we'll just forget that part.) Angie, I wasn't trying to steal your font, but this was by far the cutest.

dear fall

As I walked into my school this morning, I was consumed with feelings of fall. The cool breeze rustled my skirt and made me long for a pumpkin spice latte from starbucks (yes, I know they have them now, but I've yet to get one!) I don't know if it's the cool weather or the fact that football starts this weekend, but I am so ready for fall! So dear fall please hurry and officially get here so I can light my pumpkin spice candles, put out all of my fall decor, hang my fall sign on our new front door, I want to wear my hoodies, I want to complain about the endless hours of football we watch, I want to try new recipes for our football parties (even the ones that don't turn out so well) I want to buy mums, and most of all I want to sit on our back porch swing and not sweat. What are your favorite things about fall? And for the sake of the poor souls who have eaten my football party disasters, do you have any good fall recipes?
